Formal Clinical Supervision

The professional governing and regulating body, Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) states that all professionals registered with them should have regular formal clinical supervision in order to reflect on  practice, identify areas for improvement and put strategies into place.  Formal clinical supervision is essential to support individuals to keep their knowledge and skills up to date and enable ongoing safe and effective practice.  For more see here: Research on the characteristics of effective clinical and peer supervision in the workplace | (hcpc-uk.org)

Frequency of sessions vary but it is recommended that a clinicians have a dedicated formal clinical supervision at least six times a year.  Each session is usually two hours in duration.

The lead clinician, Tina Seed, passed a Master's module in formal clinical supervision at York University in 2007 and has set up formal clinical supervision structures across many organisations where she has worked.

The formal clinical supervision journey will begin with a training workshop to ensure a shared understanding of the process.  A contract will be agreed and signed to formalize expectations and responsibilities of each party.

The supervisor will take detailed and informative notes during the session to ensure a formal record of the discussion and agreed actions.  The notes will facilitate continuity of practice and facilitate growth and development as sessions continue.

It is vital, as a professional, you continue to quality assure your work and take time identifying when things have gone well, highlighting areas that could be improved on and reflecting on your performance and relationships across your practice.

Formal clinical supervision is usually a relationship between one supervisor and one clinician but it is possible to facilitate group supervision sessions; this is something Tina has done in the past.

TSeed Therapies can provide regular formal clinical supervision on request at £100 per hour.
